What Emergency Numbers Should You Know in the Dominican Republic?
Traveling to the Dominican Republic is generally about enjoying beaches, sunshine, excursions, nature and discovering a different culture. However, as with any international trip, it is important to know what to do if something unexpected happens.
A medical problem, a road accident, a fire or a security issue can be stressful, especially when you are in a foreign country and may not speak Spanish fluently.
The good news is that the Dominican Republic has a centralized emergency system. Before your trip, save the main emergency number in your phone and make sure you know who to contact if you need help.
Here is everything you should know about emergency numbers in the Dominican Republic.
The Main Emergency Number: 911
The most important number to remember is 911.
The Dominican Republic’s National Emergency and Security System, known as Sistema Nacional de Atención a Emergencias y Seguridad 9-1-1, coordinates emergency responses through a single number. It can dispatch the appropriate services depending on the situation, including police, medical assistance and firefighters.
For travelers, this makes things considerably easier. You do not need to search for separate numbers for the police, ambulance or fire department in the middle of an emergency.
When should you call 911?
You should call 911 when there is a genuine emergency requiring immediate assistance, for example:
- A serious road accident
- A medical emergency
- A serious injury
- A fire
- A situation presenting an immediate security risk
- An incident requiring police assistance
The official tourism website of the Dominican Republic also recommends dialing 911 for emergencies involving ambulances, firefighters or police.
When calling, try to remain calm and provide your location as precisely as possible. If you are staying at a hotel, give the hotel name and address. If you are on an excursion, provide the name of the location or the name of the company organizing your activity.
What Information Should You Give When Calling 911?
When calling an emergency service in a foreign country, one of the most important things is to explain your location as clearly as possible.
Try to provide:
- Your exact location, if known
- The name of your hotel or accommodation
- The nearest landmark
- The type of emergency
- The number of people involved
- Whether anyone is injured
- Your telephone number
If you are staying at a large resort, give the complete hotel name rather than simply saying that you are in Punta Cana or Bayahibe.
If you are traveling by car, check your location on your phone if possible. A nearby town, road, beach, restaurant or recognizable landmark can help responders identify where you are.
During an excursion, the same principle applies. Keep the name of the excursion company and the location of the activity available on your phone.
What Number Should You Call for the Police?
For an immediate emergency requiring police assistance, 911 is the number to call.
The Dominican National Police also publishes direct telephone numbers for its services: (809) 682-2151 and (809) 685-2020. Its official contact page indicates that the service is available 24 hours a day.
For travelers, however, 911 is generally the easiest number to remember when immediate assistance is required.
The National Police also publishes regional contacts. For example, its official directory lists specific numbers for areas including La Romana and Higüey, which can be useful for non-immediate situations requiring a local police contact.
What About Ambulances and Medical Emergencies?
If you or another traveler becomes seriously ill or injured, 911 is the number to remember.
The emergency system coordinates medical assistance as part of its integrated response.
This is particularly useful for travelers because medical emergencies can happen unexpectedly: dehydration, allergic reactions, injuries during activities, falls, road accidents or sudden illness are all situations in which you may need assistance.
If the situation is not immediately life-threatening, contact your hotel or travel assistance provider to identify the most appropriate medical facility.
It is also a good idea to keep your travel insurance information easily accessible. If you have medical insurance for your trip, save the emergency assistance number provided by your insurer in your phone before leaving home.
Firefighters: Another Service Covered by 911
In the event of a fire, 911 is also the number to call.
The Dominican emergency system coordinates the intervention of firefighters along with other emergency services.
If you discover a fire in your hotel, apartment, restaurant or another building, leave the area safely and contact emergency services.
Do not put yourself at risk trying to extinguish a fire unless you have been specifically trained to do so and the situation is clearly safe.
Tourist Security and CESTUR
The Dominican Republic also has a specialized tourist security service known as CESTUR, the Specialized Tourist Security Corps.
The official Dominican Republic tourism website explains that visitors can contact the CESTUR office in their area and that its officers are specifically assigned and trained to assist tourists. In the event of a crime, they can help visitors file a report and obtain further assistance.
This can be particularly useful for travelers who are unfamiliar with the local system or who need assistance after an incident.
For an immediate emergency, however, 911 remains the key number to remember.
What If You Don't Speak Spanish?
Not speaking Spanish should not prevent you from asking for emergency assistance.
The most important thing is to clearly communicate the nature of the emergency and your location. If you are staying in a hotel or participating in an organized excursion, staff can also help communicate with emergency services when necessary.
Before traveling, learning a few simple Spanish expressions can nevertheless be useful.
For example:
“Necesito una ambulancia.” — I need an ambulance.
“Llame al 911.” — Call 911.
“Hay un accidente.” — There has been an accident.
“Necesitamos ayuda.” — We need help.
“¿Dónde está el hospital?” — Where is the hospital?
You can also save these phrases in your phone for quick access.
