Fake excursions, overpriced taxis, questionable currency exchanges, and tourist prices are among the situations worth knowing about. So, is the Dominican Republic safe for tourists? Generally, yes, but a few simple precautions can make your trip much easier.
Here are the most common tourist scams in the Dominican Republic and how to avoid them.
Fake or Misleading Excursions
One of the most common problems in tourist areas involves excursions sold on beaches, in the street, or through unofficial intermediaries.
This doesn’t mean every independent seller is dishonest. However, travelers sometimes purchase an excursion based on beautiful pictures and promises, only to discover that the actual experience is completely different.
The boat may be overcrowded, certain stops may disappear from the itinerary, food and drinks may not be what was advertised, or transportation may suddenly cost extra.
In more problematic cases, travelers pay a deposit and are unable to contact the seller afterward.
Before paying, check the company actually operating the excursion, look at recent reviews, and make sure you know exactly what is included.
Overpriced Taxis
Unlike what many American travelers are used to, taxis in the Dominican Republic don’t always operate with a meter.
This means you should agree on the fare before getting into the vehicle.
Also confirm whether the price is in Dominican pesos or U.S. dollars. Both currencies are commonly mentioned in tourist areas, and misunderstanding the currency can make a huge difference.
Airport transportation is particularly important. Booking a transfer in advance with a reputable company can save you from negotiating immediately after a long flight.
Dominican Pesos vs. U.S. Dollars
Here’s something that can easily confuse American visitors: the Dominican peso also uses the $ symbol.
Seeing “$1,000” doesn’t automatically mean US$1,000. It may mean RD$1,000.
In tourist destinations such as Punta Cana, Bayahibe, La Romana, and Samaná, businesses may quote prices in either Dominican pesos or U.S. dollars.
If you’re unsure, simply ask:
“Is that pesos or dollars?”

The "Free" Gift That Isn't Free
A bracelet, souvenir, photograph, tasting, or another small item may occasionally be presented as a friendly gesture before the person asks for money.
The easiest solution is simply to ask whether something is free before accepting it.
A polite “No, gracias” also works perfectly well when you’re not interested.
Rental Car Damage Disputes
Renting a vehicle gives you plenty of freedom to explore the Dominican Republic, but document its condition before leaving.
Take photos or a quick video showing the bodywork, wheels, windshield, and any existing scratches.
Also understand what your insurance covers and whether there is a deductible.
This isn’t specific to the Dominican Republic, but it’s an easy precaution that can prevent disagreements when returning a rental vehicle.
Unofficial Guides at Tourist Attractions
At some tourist sites, someone may approach you and begin explaining the attraction without clearly saying that they’re offering a paid guiding service.
A few minutes later, they may expect payment.
If you want a guide, use an official or recommended guide and agree on the price beforehand. If you don’t need one, politely decline from the beginning.
Is Punta Cana Safe Outside the Resorts?
This is an especially common question among American travelers.
You don’t need to spend your entire vacation inside an all-inclusive resort to enjoy the Dominican Republic safely. Punta Cana is only one small part of the country, and there is much more to discover beyond the resort areas.
The important thing is knowing where you’re going, using reliable transportation, choosing reputable providers, and applying normal travel precautions.
