Best areas to stay in the Dominican Republic

Beyond Punta Cana’s resorts...

Choosing where to stay in the Dominican Republic is not as simple as opening a travel website and picking an “all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana.” The country is far richer, more diverse and layered than what brochures often show. The Dominican Republic has Caribbean beaches, Atlantic surf towns, colonial cities, mountain villages, and protected national parks—each with a different personality. The “best” area depends on your travel style: relaxation, nature, adventure, culture or nightlife.
If you are planning a vacation, honeymoon or extended stay, here is a guide to the destinations that truly reflect the soul of the island.

Punta Cana: convenient, polished… and undeniably touristy

It would be dishonest to ignore Punta Cana. It remains the most popular entry point for international tourism, thanks to its airport, direct flights from the US and Europe, and dozens of all-inclusive resorts. If you want a stress-free holiday with private beaches, buffets, massages, golf courses and a cocktail always ready, Punta Cana delivers exactly that.
However, that convenience comes with a trade-off. Punta Cana is not representative of Dominican life. Resorts are often isolated, staff speak English all day, and the area is designed to feel like a bubble. For first-time visitors, it can be comfortable; for travelers who want culture, authenticity or interaction with locals, it can be… unsatisfying.

Dining options in Punta Cana tend to be international—steak houses, sushi fusion, hotel restaurants, beach clubs—rather than Dominican comedores or family seafood spots. The nightlife is polished and glamorous, but rarely local. If your idea of vacation is comfort, pool time, easy excursions, Punta Cana works well. But if you are seeking something deeper, you should look at the Caribbean coast, or the northern shoreline.

Bayahibe & Dominicus: the Caribbean coast at its most genuine

Ask Dominicans where they go when they want beautiful waters, quiet beaches and authentic food—Bayahibe and Dominicus will appear again and again. Located on the Caribbean coast, these towns offer calmer seas than Punta Cana, fewer crowds, more family-run businesses and a sense of community that travelers often fall in love with.

You don’t see endless rows of mega-resorts. You find small marinas, local restaurants, beach kiosks selling pescado frito, cafés, bakeries, all within walking distance. Many visitors are pleasantly surprised when they discover that Bayahibe is still a true Dominican village, with fishermen returning at sunset, music playing softly in the streets and neighbors greeting each other in the morning.

From Bayahibe, you also enjoy direct access to Saona Island and Catalina Island, two of the most stunning marine areas in the country. Even excursions are more intimate here: catamarans, sailboats and smaller groups, less party-boat chaos and fewer loud crowds. Where Punta Cana is designed for mass tourism, Bayahibe feels like slow-travel Caribbean—a place to breathe.

If your goal is to relax, swim in turquoise water, eat local food and avoid the “resort bubble,” this is arguably the best area to stay in the Dominican Republic.

Sabana de la Mar & Los Haitises: for nature lovers and explorers

Not every traveler dreams of beach bars and infinity pools. Some want untouched wilderness, birds, caves, mangroves and silence. If that speaks to you, the Los Haitises National Park and the neighboring town of Sabana de la Mar are unforgettable.

Los Haitises is one of the country’s most protected ecosystems. Picture dramatic limestone formations rising from emerald water, flocks of pelicans and frigatebirds, ancient caves with Taíno petroglyphs, and thick mangrove forests navigated by boat. This is the Dominican Republic before hotels, before social media: raw, spiritual, cinematic.

Staying near Sabana de la Mar is not about nightlife or shopping. It is for travelers who cherish eco-tourism, bird-watching, kayaking, hiking, and peace. Cellphone service can be weak, and comfort levels vary depending on where you book—but that is part of the beauty.
This region attracts photographers, writers, conservationists, and couples who want to disconnect completely. If Punta Cana is “easy vacation,” Los Haitises is immersion in nature.

Las Terrenas, Puerto Plata & Cabarete: the dynamic north coast

The north coast is often overlooked by first-timers but adored by digital nomads, long-term expats and adventurous travelers. The Atlantic sees more wind and waves, which gives the region a very different personality than the Caribbean side.

Las Terrenas in the Samaná province is vibrant yet relaxed. Formerly a fishing village, it’s now a multicultural community with French, Italian, Canadian and Dominican influences. Cafés, bakeries, beach restaurants, boutique hotels and palm-lined shores give it a Bali-meets-Caribbean feel. People come for long stays, remote work, diving, whale watching (January–March) and a balance between nature and social life.

Puerto Plata offers more urban energy: cable cars, Victorian architecture, the Malecon, rum distilleries, and historical sites. Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses to upscale villas. It is a real Dominican city, not a tourist bubble.

Then there is Cabarete, the international capital of kitesurfing and windsurfing. Here, travelers mix with athletes, surfers and a young European-American crowd. Cafés and beach bars stretch along the sand; sunsets are electric and spontaneous.

If you crave community, activities, longer stays and a cosmopolitan atmosphere, the north coast is a perfect match.

Santo Domingo: culture, history and day-trip exploration

Santo Domingo is not a beach destination, but it is the cultural heart of the Dominican Republic. Founded in 1496, its Zona Colonial is the first European city of the Americas. Cobblestone streets, Spanish-colonial courtyards, museums, churches and plazas tell the story of half a millennium.

Staying here is ideal if you value art, gastronomy, nightlife, museums and history. The city has trendy restaurants, cocktail bars, boutique hotels, jazz evenings, and a local social scene that is fascinating to observe. It is an urban environment: busy, loud at times, but incredibly alive.

However, Santo Domingo should be approached with guidance. Traffic is chaotic, some neighborhoods are not ideal at night, and navigating the city without local advice can be stressful. A guided experience or a well-planned itinerary makes a huge difference. Many travelers choose to stay elsewhere and visit the capital as a one-day cultural excursion, which works perfectly.

Conclusion: don’t settle for the first postcard

There is no single “best area” in the Dominican Republic.
There are different Dominican Republics, each showing a different side of the country:

  • Punta Cana for easy, resort-style comfort.

  • Bayahibe and Dominicus for authentic Caribbean waters and laid-back village life.

  • Sabana de la Mar and Los Haitises for wild landscapes and eco-tourism.

  • Las Terrenas, Puerto Plata and Cabarete for community, activity and adventure.

  • Santo Domingo for culture, history and the modern Dominican rhythm.

If you want a trip that goes beyond beaches and buffets, consider exploring these regions thoughtfully. Many travelers combine locations—a few days near the Caribbean coast, a few days in nature, and a day in the colonial capital—to feel the full identity of the country, thanks to agency specialized in tailor made travels.
