Choosing where to stay in the Dominican Republic is not as simple as opening a travel website and picking an “all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana.” The country is far richer, more diverse and layered than what brochures often show. The Dominican Republic has Caribbean beaches, Atlantic surf towns, colonial cities, mountain villages, and protected national parks—each with a different personality. The “best” area depends on your travel style: relaxation, nature, adventure, culture or nightlife.

Punta Cana: convenient, polished… and undeniably touristy
It would be dishonest to ignore Punta Cana. It remains the most popular entry point for international tourism, thanks to its airport, direct flights from the US and Europe, and dozens of all-inclusive resorts. If you want a stress-free holiday with private beaches, buffets, massages, golf courses and a cocktail always ready, Punta Cana delivers exactly that.
However, that convenience comes with a trade-off. Punta Cana is not representative of Dominican life. Resorts are often isolated, staff speak English all day, and the area is designed to feel like a bubble. For first-time visitors, it can be comfortable; for travelers who want culture, authenticity or interaction with locals, it can be… unsatisfying.
Dining options in Punta Cana tend to be international—steak houses, sushi fusion, hotel restaurants, beach clubs—rather than Dominican comedores or family seafood spots. The nightlife is polished and glamorous, but rarely local. If your idea of vacation is comfort, pool time, easy excursions, Punta Cana works well. But if you are seeking something deeper, you should look at the Caribbean coast, or the northern shoreline.
Bayahibe & Dominicus: the Caribbean coast at its most genuine
Ask Dominicans where they go when they want beautiful waters, quiet beaches and authentic food—Bayahibe and Dominicus will appear again and again. Sabana de la Mar & Los Haitises: for nature lovers and explorers

Las Terrenas, Puerto Plata & Cabarete: the dynamic north coast
The north coast is often overlooked by first-timers but adored by digital nomads, long-term expats and adventurous travelers. The Atlantic sees more wind and waves, which gives the region a very different personality than the Caribbean side.
Las Terrenas in the Samaná province is vibrant yet relaxed. Formerly a fishing village, it’s now a multicultural community with French, Italian, Canadian and Dominican influences. Cafés, bakeries, beach restaurants, boutique hotels and palm-lined shores give it a Bali-meets-Caribbean feel.
